An interpretation of John Wayne that I painted as a commission for a client who commissioned the Route 66 mural last year. I was trying to figure out a way to bring something special to the piece, so looked up some different western patterns and I thought this one would fit perfectly. Acrylic on canvas 30”x48”.
This was the second rendition of the 30”x48” acrylic painting commission of John Wayne for a client in Middletown, CA. I delivered the painting of John Wayne in the colorful chaps and he found them to be too flamboyant, so I painted some leather chaps over them. The texture of the previous painting can be seen on the canvas.
Painted from a photo of client’s dog relaxin in the RV, though I modified the flower and added the mountain lake sunset to customize it in honor of the pup’s passing and the mountainous big skies of NW Montana.

It seems like every day there is something brought to my attention that is tragic and terrifying. Landlords are pricing people out of the city and driving many to the streets, children are bringing assault weapons to school and murdering classmates, corporations successfully lobby to change laws that maximize their profits, the coral reefs are dying and the President of the United States is openly sexist, racist and xenophobic. We are energy and energy is power, and yet it is so easy to feel powerless while being overwhelmed by the onslaught of the 24 hour news cycle. Darkness cannot drive out darkness, so we must be the light.
This series brings attention to our commonalities as it celebrates our differences. I borrow symbols and styles from the ceremonial wear of ancient cultures all over the world, as well as contemporary concepts such as technology and the quest for the Unknown. I dream of the future by acknowledging and exploring what has come before. If you look back far enough, we are all born of the same pool of slime and stardust. My use of fluorescent paint and UV LEDs give the work the illusion of shining from within, as though the work is its own light source- just as we must be.

I see collage as a sort of visual archaeology through the content of our culture. It is a delicate medium, and the very paper the images are printed on tells a story about the time. It is a way to view the world through the lens of the attitudes and biases of the time, and my own commentary is clear through how I choose to place them.

Commissions and personal works
This 10’x56’ mural was designed for the new Prop Rental Business, Tangerine Prop Shop. The curled tangerine peel shrinks as the gate opens and closes as the delivery trucks come and go. The corrugated surface to the left proved to be a challenge, being that spray paint is a new medium for me- but I kept the design simple enough so the varied surface wouldn’t get distracting with detail. It also kept the image more graphic, which was the intention. It can be found at 24th and Magnolia in Oakland, CA
Closer detail of the corrugated metal gate for Tangerine Prop Shop. This portion is approx 10’x20’. Spray paint and acrylic on metal. The texture of the gate with the shipping containers is kind of satisfying.
Acrylic and spray paint on this roll up door. Approx 10’x12’ and an extremely finicky surface. I wanted the design to give a nod to the photo styling business, as it is now a prop rental company as well as staging company, so I did this little artful stack of citrus with the name overhead. It can be found at 24th and Magnolia in West Oakland
Mural design for a queer hair stylist, using the image of Divine from the Female Trouble artwork, but changing the film title to the title of the Salon, and adding a blow dryer in her hand. This was intended as a nod to the cover of Pink Flamingos, where Divine is holding a gun.
4’x32’ custom mural on plywood. I designed it with some details for the client to honor his brother who passed, including a license plate with his brother’s birthday on it and changing “Roy’s” to “Larry’s”. The car choice is also very personal. Painted in my studio and then installed onsite in Middletown, CA in 2020.
