Family Cabin
Family Cabin

acrylic on canvas

22"x13"

a painting of my family cabin in NE Washinton that my great-grandparents bought in 1932.  Five generations of my family have spent summers at this special place, and it has been painted by my great grandmother & my grandmother, so I decided to add my own perception, flavor, and generational relationship w/ the cabin to the tradition.  I sent it to a cousin in Australia, and the rest of the family has a print of it w/ a hand-made frame by my grampa.

This piece was commissioned pro bono by the award winning recording artist Selan, as song art for his song "Water is Life." All proceeds made by the song have gone to the Oceti Sakowin camp at Standing Rock.  He liked my "I Will Fight No More Forever" portrait of Chief Josef of the Nez Perce, but wanted something closer to the story of the Lakota Sioux, so I did a portrait of Sitting Bull. The rainbow snake symbolizes the rainbow of an oil slick and references the black snake prophecy.  The Lakota symbol on his forehead is the "four winds,", symbolizing the cardinal directions and the energies they represent.
